Nature's Web

When we hear the word mushroom, most of us picture an umbrella shaped vegetable that we either loved or hated as a kid. However, you may not know that what you find in the supermarket is only the fruiting body of a much more complex fungal network known as mycelium. Mycelium are thread like structures that branch into underground networks. Often quoted the Earth’s natural Internet, mycelium create a link between plant roots which allows for widely separated plants to stay connected.

André Reis: Saving the World

André Reis: Saving the World

My name is André Reis, I'm a teenager from Portugal, I'm 16, about to turn 17, and I'm here today to tell you about my journey in a challenge that was proposed to me by Human Nature Projects.

The Zero Waste Challenge

First of all, what did this challenge consist of? This challenge consisted in changing parts of my lifestyle so that my daily waste was less. I thought that this challenge was quite simple and that I was going to do it with the greatest of ease, but this was not the case...

Conservation and Bushfires

Conservation and Bushfires

Smoke billows in great heaps above a dry, smouldering forest. Thick ash darkens skies across the country, as far east as New Zealand. Entire towns are reduced to skeletal wreckages; evacuees gather in terrified groups on beaches that were once the image of an Australian summer holiday. Injured wildlife recover in loungerooms, turned into makeshift outpatient wards…

Conservation and Climate Change

Conservation and Climate Change

Climate change is an existential threat. Mostly framed around human existence, we cannot forget that threat extends to much more than humans. There are few, if any, species of life on Earth that will not be affected by climate change. Many already are. Conservation, with its key function of preserving the natural environment and all that lives within it, is inextricably linked to climate change. Conservation has a central role to play in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation and adaptation exist in tandem in the response to climate change; our most effective responses require elements of each.

Could Everyone Name Their Own Species?

Could Everyone Name Their Own Species?

Who wouldn’t want to have their name on a flamingo?

Sir David Attenborough has called it the “biggest of compliments that you could ask from any scientific community,” and he should know: he’s got a whopping 18 animals that bear his name. But for all us average Joes, surely there’s no hope of such lasting fame? If you’re not a politician, celebrity or scientist, honestly your chances are pretty slim- but with a few tweaks to the system, naming your own animal could be a thing.
